Florida Invitation

Doug Backes ’70 of the Southwest Florida chapter invites visiting alumni to join in their events if you happen to be vacationing down there:

Greetings from Sunny SW Florida! I am writing today to north-east and mid-west chapter presidents (as this is where the vast majority of our alumni visitors hail from) to ask that you pass on an invitation from our SWF Chapter to you and your members. Here in Naples/Fort Myers area our chapter meets “seasonally,” generally based on months when our local members have returned from summer vacations up north and when our northerly fellow alumni snowbirds are visiting here.

It would be our pleasure to have your members join us for our events when they are in our SWF area. Our luncheons are held on the second Monday of the month (November to April) at the beautiful and accommodating Audubon Country Club in North Naples. The cost is on the low end of similar venues at $30 per person. In December we forgo the luncheon in favor of a great Army-Navy game day tailgate event. Speaker are a mix of local personalities and dignitaries, USNA associated personnel (e.g. USNA Direct of Athletics Chet Gladchuk may be our March speaker in 2020), and other military and notable dignitaries.

Other additional activities are promulgated as they are proposed by the membership, so to be informed we ask that you let us know by email when you will be in our area — that will get you on the distribution for all event announcements during our seasonal period. Come join the camaraderie and fellowship that USNA alumni (and guests) participation provides. Our POC for being added to our visitor notification list and/or membership applications is David Finch ’67 at df121819@aol.com. All will be welcome.

Thanks and Warm Regards,

Doug Backes ’70

He was confirmed by the Senate on July 11, 2001 and departed the U.S. Embassy Beijing on January 20, 2009.

At our Monday March 11 luncheon, our speaker will be Dr. Jonathan Matusitz, Ph.D., Associate Professor – University of Central Florida, Nicholson School of Communication. Dr. Matusitz will discuss his recent research on “The European Migrant Crisis: What America Can Learn.”
